The character of rocks has had an impact on my life for as long as I can remember. I love them cracked and sharp edged. I love them rounded and smooth. I love the feel of them in my hand. I love the colors, designs and textures found inside them. Break open a geode and find a crystalline world. Agatized coral is a surprise every time you get a peek inside.

A few rocks turned into a small collection, that collection turned into a series of paintings, the rock collecting turned into an almost obsession and the series continues to grow and evolve.

The Passage series is based on fragments of stone with the channels, cracks and mineral veins that form through the forces of nature. Going even deeper, the Cavern paintings are mixed media abstracts with bold organic shapes based on the underground landscape. Caverns are the landscape below. These undulating forms create another world rarely seen.

Artist Statement

Nature is full of textures and I love texture. When combined with color on a canvas, it can be wildly exciting, suggesting space, form, movement and even atmosphere. When I am attracted by something in nature, whether it’s mountains, rock formations, beach sand, flowers, trees or water, very often it is the quality of the light and texture that hold my attention.

The process of creating textured artwork is particularly fun because there are surprises with every layer. When the first layer of paint goes over the texture medium, it flows where the hills and valleys take it, much like water flows in the natural world. It cannot be controlled, but with practice, I am able to predict some of the results.

The particular group of pieces I call my Beach series is all about texture but color plays an important role. I love the way the water moves and ripples, the way it changes the texture of the sand. I am fascinated by the way the sand changes the color of the water and is visible under the water. The beach debris has a myriad of additional colors and textures and sometimes adds shiny, metallic effects. I think the possibilities for this series are endless.
